2015 Game Journalism

The real Issue plaguing the indie game and game journalist scene

Gamer WitchHunt 2.0 #GamerGate

#GamerGate

"It's not the movies, but VIDEA GAYMES!"

Get those stupid fucking 90's nostalgia goggles back on kids... for it's Gamer Witchhunt 2.0!

Really getting tired of this shit.

Major news, get back to your missing planes and the 4 year coverage of the upcoming 2016 Elections.

Bloggers.. I'm sorry, "journalists"..get back to college and finish those damn Liberal Arts Degrees... 8 semesters in, you'd think you'd finish.

Sluggish, Poorly Coded Games & Today's Overrated Hipster Indie Devs (Pro #GamerGate Dev Rant)

Real talk...the focus on slow, sluggish, upper upper level spaghetti code like Ruby or js might be the cause of the more, as they say... "cinematic" games.  Yes, Javascript is finally getting some ok (albeit still bloated) frameworks...but as somebody who came from an era when calling yourself a "game developer" in the Computer Science field was still taboo...we were strictly taught to make the best code for the specific system we are working on.  This included getting to know your computer's code all the way down to Assembly.  I'm not saying you should know Assembly for every chipset you code for...portability of apps/game is very important today due to the various marketplaces (Steam, IOS, Android, Web, PC, Consoles)...but a real programmer must understand that this one-size-fits-all methodology with IDEs like Unity won't always work as planned.  Not all systems are created equal.  What works on a an iPhone might not work on an Android phone... what runs smoothly on an Xbox might not work on a Playstation. A great example of that last example would be Skyrim.  Due to the now old PS3's memory allocation methodology with it's Cell computing, memory management is very tricky. The result was a very buggy and subpar version of a great game.

Again, I can understand from a business point of view why you would want to code once and have it run on all devices...but what the current indie scene forgets (in addition to giving all accolades to "devs" who hardly proved themselves beyond some political message and/or Patreon panhandling) is that there's a cost associated with a one-size-fits all coding structure.

Even AAA companies like Ubisoft are running into this issue.  Tetris on the PS4 should not in any way run sluggish...but that comes from bloated firmware and bad coding practices.  Video game programming is not easy and unlike applications seen in other industries like business & finances... video game programming does in fact use ALL you learn in Computer Science, from coding a full structure of classes that use inheritance and polymorphism both logically and (most importantly) fast.  To code a fast and highly interactive game you need to know things like when to use certain data structures over others for the best performance... when to use a struct or enums instead of whole classes, what to throw into closures and what not to during each step of the game loop cycle...when to use linked lists and/or tree structures for level design and/or pathfinding.  You then have to code all of that with finite, well structured animations, camera/movement or maybe some dynamic lighting, etc that don't blow up that cycle and lead to such lag.  This is why the professors I had in college in 2003 were dead wrong in their notion that it was "childish" to be a Computer Scientist for the sake of being a game developer.

Today, everyone and their dog are game devs... or at least claim they are.  Trust me, I love it.  I want more game dev, guys and girls and I'm glad to see this branch of computer science get the limelight it has so deserved.  Back when I was in my CS courses in the early 00s...it was just so taboo to say you were a game dev and, yes, as others on both sides of the Gamergate / Social Justice Warrior have claimed... women in CS were almost non existent in the entire field.  Some women where there with me when I was in Suffolk Community College's CS courses but almost all were gone when I was in the large lecture halls of Stony Brook University... while trying so hard to understand the barley legible bumblings of their CS professors then.  Was bad enough my manager job at Friendly's almost killed me... it was salt to the wound to see my CS courses at Suny Stony Brook not only have even more disenfranchised professors, but have the front row of the "class" have what I could only describe as autistic "melvins" who interrupted the lecture every two seconds with questions.  I, like many do indeed want to see more women in the field as those few who do make the choice to be programmers do indeed get paid the same as their male counterparts (see Roberta William's example above).  Please, we need more girls in programming.  The doors are open but those who close the doors behind them need to be told why they are wrong.

Except, there's been an issue that older devs like myself have noticed and it's brought up by Daniel Vavra's quote above. Due to the recent spearheading of indie game development into popular culture... we are getting people who are riding on the coattails of this movement..using clickbaiting, profiteering, trend-spamming and professional self victimization to get themselves known as either game "journalists" or even, more a more damning precedence, as "game devs" themselves.  In the past, in both the journalism and game development fields...such people would have been told to "put up or shutup", they'd be held up to their actual skills in those fields.  I'm not saying I'm the greatest programmer around; despite my quick understanding of one of the newest programming languages.. Apple Swift (and creating a published game with it), my past knowledge of "tougher" languages like C/C++, Java and Obj-C...I'm still so green in the system since I only have one fully "completed" game, PikiPop, one forever-in-development game, Tenshi-Oni, and code stubs of games that might never be..thanks mostly to a terrible job luck that didn't end when I left Friendly's.  I'm not writing this to say "I've been here forever thus I must have a place in the indie scene"...but what I see are what we don't need in the indie scene... organizations, ones as old as the IGDA pandering to psuedo devs who have less to show than even I do as a dev, yet getting all the fame, financial help and accolades.
Not only are we getting a new wave of game devs that are using a political message, loud complaining or in some cases self-victimization to get known and help by these now cracked organizations...but an emphasis in programming methodologies and languages that are counterintuitive to the tenants of all Computer Science.  The abnormal focus in Ruby and Javascript is proof of that. Granted, when I was in school, Java was the new kid on the coding block... it was a great tool for learning OOD...but in no way would you want to code games or any applications that required speed and runtime efficiency.  Back then, to be a game dev, you'd learn about OOD through Java but if you were to actually make a game... you did it in C++.  If that was too hard to do...you'd then maybe use actionScript and kept your game in the availability of only online Flash portals.  As of today, that has changed. Java is not the hog it used to be and is what's under Android's hood.  Java is now where it belongs as a legit mid-upperlevel language that also is much easier to read, structure than C/C++ or even Objective-C can be.  The growth of Java and Android was inevitable.  Javascript is not Java though...it's a completely different language and only now getting some ok frameworks.

My issue is that we are having organizations like IGDA putting favoritism in programmers who probably never made classes in C/C++ or Java, whom probably know nothing of OOD, who cut and paste a function in a .js file and think it's just magic and then slap their name on it.  What's worse is that these organizations and game journalists are promoting these pseudo devs based off of their political views.. not their coding prowess.  Like other situations where politics controls it...those who don't fit in that opinionated mold get shunned out from any opportunity no matter their skill or willingness to improve that skill.  What we are seeing is a "cliche" of what you can loosely consider to be game programmers, making sub par products despite all the Patreon money (or in the case of Brianna Wu, $200,000 from mommy and daddy... I mean, fuck, if I had that I'd be a AAA dev by now... and I sure as hell would not make 3D sprites that look worse than the 1995 3D models from Reboot if I had the resources she has.)

What I'm saying is that if this trend with the "Indie Scene" continues... not only will we see quality devs be pushed to the side in favor of a rich upper middle class club, but we as gamers will lose the quality gaming that the indie scene has and can give due to the creative freedom (which the SJW side wants to control) and we could even lose much of what has been built on in Computer Science as a whole.  As a programmer who was told I'm not good enough... I do want an even playing field, but at the same time, we need quality in the coding and art that makes games so great.  We don't need a political agenda forcing the hand of the industry...otherwise we'll see more games that should be simple to execute on current gen systems & devices run terribly slow and thus cause the entire industry crash.

Promote quality code, quality game art (sexy, violent or not), and devs who push for excellence in that field... not those who use the popularity of gaming as a soap box, whom now seem to want to be gatekeepers in this industry.

The Extremism of "I'm Offended" - A Message About The Terrible Loss At Charlie Hebdo

As a site, blog, person who uses satire to laugh at the stupidities of life and those who make it so easy to knock down off of their self made pedestals... I couldn't go today without adding my name to the list of bloggers, journalists and satirical writers who were shocked and horrified by the terrorist attack on a place that not only shares my first name, but shares my mindset on the various extremists around us.

The internet has accomplished two major achievements over the past decade... 1) It has saved comedy; humor through memes, social media and forum commenting has not only broaden what it means to be funny, but it has given everyone a chance to joke and even improve on their comedic wit via comment voting systems. 2) It has given many people access to freedom of speech and expression.. particularly in countries that have never had it and whom to this day try to silence them.

The backward & barbaric religious rhetoric has been around for a long time...some are trying to use the "I'm offended" card to justify their shaming of those who wish to express their freedom of speech.  As we saw today, it was done in a violent and abhorrent way. Be it from the modern death throes of the out of date, useless extreme religious right...or the misguided authoritarianism behind the Cultural Marxism / Moralism 2.0  "social justice warriors" of the extreme left... trying to silence Free Speech via shaming, rhetoric, or worse, the barbaric violence seen today by the cowards who attacked the Charlie Hebdo paper... you have no place in this modern world driven by the internet.

Me and others can care less if you are "offended" "triggered" or what ever stupid crap you might spew about satire, comedy or artistic expression.  Offended by a cartoon strip, a video game or other piece of fiction or comedy...tough luck.  When cowardly attacks like this happen, it only strengthens the resolve of those like me who express and fight for freedom of speech.

"Offended?" "Triggered"...tough shit.  RIP those at Charlie Hebdo who lost their lives because some people were "offended"  Be it if you are a "social justice warrior" from the left or a "warrior of god" on the right...you are an extremist and these actions are not to be tolerated and may those who wish to keep comedy, satire and freedom of speech keep up the real fight and stay strong during these tragic moments.  Life is too short to take it too seriously... laugh at it, make fun of it.

#CES2015 From The Point of View of An Electronics Employee

For the record, I just want to state that the gamer and gadget geek in me does get excited to see what #CES2015 will showcase.  At the age of 1 I was working the newest gadget at the time, the VCR.. I love gadgets and as a programmer I can't live without them.  I don't hate CES and I know it was CES that brought about an even better convention, E3 when E3 broke from it in the 90's.  Yet, I feel that there is an unspoken roll of the eyes that me and others who actually work in this industry have when we see CES is going on since...the reality of what happens after it, is what we have to deal with.

Of the thousands of companies trying to catch everyone's attention, we probably will only see 1 or 2 actual groundbreaking products... if we are so lucky.  This fact won't stop the barrage of products and product lists that will soon barrage those of us who have to add this shit to websites, data lists and inventory systems at our respected jobs.  Retailers this time of year seem to also have a yearly recurrence of amnesia, simultaneous stroke or whatever it may be.. and freak the fuck out that everyone did indeed spend all their money during the holidays and yes, like every fucking year, sales will drop in the weeks following the holiday rush.  Companies across the states cut their nose despite their face by cutting or firing people whom they'll need right back again when the inevitable rush returns again.

I've worked for a long time in the pro camera industry and this industry is probably the worst when it comes to it's yearly amnesia...something the retailers, sales reps and manufacturers try to remedy with the popularity of CES.  In an industry that's already bloated with mostly unneeded accessories for your accessories' accessories.. what is suppose to be a convention that could bring the brightest minds in technology together, instead becomes a fervor of snake oil salesmen that only bastardize the replace-a-marginally-better-product-a-month-later-with-another-only-marginally-better-model that the pro camera industry thrives on.  Those of us who work in this industry instead see CES as an oncoming storm of mostly bullshit to add to the already convoluted product lists that were flipped over & replaced just a few months prior.  We will hear no end to the sales reps touting how their product is the next best thing and should be featured ahead of the hundreds of other reps saying the same god damn thing. By the time April comes along...all of this will be forgotten, replaced by a crazy emphasis on Mother's & Father's Days as electronics retailers & manufacturers once again come out of their yearly memory wiping stroke from the recent holiday rush...just to repeat the silly cycle come year's end.

Again, I do like seeing CES and some of the awesome gadgets that could come from it. I don't hate CES... just want you all to get an idea of the massive electronic excrement that people, at least in the pro camera industry, are about to shovel once the CES trends and hashtags are done this week.

This classic Onion News video (which this header image is from) sums it all up perfectly...

New 2015 FDA Labels For Internalized Miso Soup

A small group of  very obnoxious consumers, who this holiday season called for the banning of GTA V in Target retail stores, have now been triggered by yet another product on the retail shelves... Miso soup.

The group of mostly asexual nap-kin males and a few strongly colored hair female HTML typists* quickly jumped to twitter and tumblr to post their complaints about the once beloved Japanese soup.  They claim the name, "miso soup" too closely resembles the word "misogyny" and demand that the product either be pulled from the shelves or be labeled appropriately.  The complaining, hash-tagging and even a Kickstarter gained enough steam to prompt the FDA in labeling all Miso Soup products to the group's demands.

"This is a win for all who shop in the food isle and feel oppressed.  It's demeaning enough that food isles are never spaced wide enough to fit women who are big beautiful and healthy."
says Josh McIntosh, so-called "financial curator" behind Feminist Frequency and self-proclaimed "Social Hacker" The Feminist Frequency Channel has already begun a Kickstarter and Patreon campaign for their new special "Tropes vs Women in Soups" About $25,000 has been raised thus far for the special.  No word on it's release or others that have been promised.  When we asked when the next video will launch, we were simply told to "check [our] privileges before asking such questions."

...
*(edit: We were told  very strongly by many representing the group that they are not "typists" but instead wish to be called "programmers"... being that HTML is not a programming language we felt "typist" was the best word...but to honor their requests and those at the Indiecade & XOXOfest cons who've also posted their concerns for this wording... we will now refer them as "innovative programmers" in future posts)

Anita Visits Comiket 87 To Fight Japan's Patriarchal Culture

"Excuse me...deeply oppressed miss, do you have a moment to discuss our lord and savior, Josh McIntosh?"

Making use of her 5th Patreon-funded vacation to Japan this year and to keep up with the tax code of making it a business trip, Anita made sure to visit Comiket 87 to try to convince the sexy cosplayers that their willingness to dress sexy in front of The Patriarchy is due to their internal misogyny.

Nintendo Finally Creates The Samus Suit Tumblr SJWs Can Approve

Today Nintendo gave into demands by self proclaimed gamers, Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn by creating a new alt Samus Suit in the upcoming Smash Bros U game.  This, after the previous little number seen below "triggered" SJWs across suburban cul-de-sacs to rage tweet... "OMG #IDontEven!"

The newly redesigned outfit has been herald by SJW sites across the web as a "step forward for female rights and sexuality...

Polygon reviewers rated it "a 9 out of 11!"

Tumblr raves...

"It's only way to keep those damn cis shitlords from raping Samus with their eyes."

SRS claims...

"If we can only now make it legal to kill neckbeards who say the R-word, the world will be a better place for us BRDs and dragonkin."

Nintendo failed to comment much more about the change in design other than stating,

"Sorry, we would say more, but we fear any additional word we say will 'trigger' those who were offended by Samus' previous outfit"

Turns out shortly after their comment though, a new Twitter and Tumblr campaign titled "#CISNES" gained steam since apparently Nintendo saying the word "additional" "triggered"  and "deeply offended" SJW across middle class America.

Currently, a new kickstarter by Anita Sarkeesian has begun to fight what they claim is "Nintendo not checking their privileges"

Facebook Buys Oculus Rift

Oculus Rift has been sold to Facebook for $2 Billion.  This is great for the console in general in terms of it's potential distribution and recognition beyond us game devs and hardcore gamers... but this is where the outcry is also coming from.  Even Minecraft's creator, Notch stated that the news is "scary" enough to make him think about dropping the Oculus Rift version of his game.

What's scary, is indeed what a Facebook owned videogame system could entail... subpar microtransaction-driven social games or social apps like, oh god... seeing your friend's facebook feed in full virtual reality.  As a 30 year old, this means nothing but a panoramic hell of baby pictures, sonograms and cryptic one line messages where you aren't sure if somebody's going to have their 4th baby, leave their now second baby daddy/momma or a combo of both.

Let's hope Facebook doesn't put their "marketing knowhow" into this very promising and possibly industry-changing console and leave it to the very talented dev teams involved with it already.  With Oculus, "What's App?" and a few years back, Instagram... Facebook has been buying out what could have replaced them later on and taking in their user base.  For those like me who've been around since AOL Pages and Xanga, Facebook represents the current title of "social hotspot" that was once owned by Yahoo, then AOL, and later MySpace.  As videogame consoles/games continue to be social  hotspots themselves, Facebook is strategically throwing their money into the area of VR gaming.  Either way, very soon, many people will know what the Oculus Rift is... just hope Farmville VR and Wink To FB Like My Baby Pics aren't the only choices we get.

Voice Acting, My Game, My Anime Store, My Sites... Hell Just $50 A Day

Really excited that I have voice acting as a side job... that now goes with the IOS game I'm (slowly) trying to make, my anime figure store, my websites and these blogs that are a part of my rather varied "side income"  With how silly the job market is for web, social media & IOS devs can get sometimes (I mean, really... there are places with 1/10th my FB following looking for people to update their social media with freaken Masters in Journalism and/or business as a prerequisite)...it's really smart for anyone in my position to just make that side income, the full income.  Freelance, telecommute, run your own ship... anything but the rat race at this point.

Crazy cheap unchanged pay I get at my day job aside... there's other silliness in the IT job market.  Even basic web dev is about 3x my current work's pay but I know (and prefer) IOS game development...and that pay is considerably higher than that.  Problem is, be it to appease shareholders and/or simply having HR departments that do stupid crap to keep their fragile jobs... some of the prerequisites for even entry jobs in IT are downright silly.  Yes, as I said earlier... social media manager jobs (ie: just tweeting and facebooking for a company) have insanely stupid prerequisites.  I shit you not... I've applied to even those jobs since..hell even they pay more/equal to $15/hr.  These companies have no more than 500-1000 followers and here's me with my 6200+ followers on Facebook, a long running website and webstore mentioned on Business Week, over 2000 twitter followers. Surely that would be enough to get those positions and then some.  Nope... again, I shit you not, I've been told I "don't qualify", needed an MBA and even once was told I got the job...to only be told after hunting down the suddenly hard to find owner of the company that I didn't because of my personal facebook profile post.  The post in question... a post thanking the person and company and hoping for a positive future with the company.  My personal profile has 500+ friends...I have more friends than that company has followers!  Web dev jobs and IOS dev jobs..ok, I can understand needing people who know PHP & SQL like the back of their hand.  I get that... but a job that is ONLY tweeting and facebooking asking for post grad prerequisites for a skill a 5 year old with a smart phone can do... is just enough to make anyone flip a table.

The job market stupidity doesn't stop there.  Understandably IOS game dev jobs, since the job pays more and requires much more knowledge beyond web/graphic design, will require a bit more.  You'll have to jump through more hoops and improve that slave price tag on your ear known as your resume to get through to the now unseen in-person interview.  I understand that.  What I don't understand is that some junior positions ask for you to have multiple successful games in the market.  Forget junior IOS dev positions, if you have even one successful game in the market you can run your own damn game studio.  It's like trying to hire Richard Branson as a flight attendant for American Airlines and requiring his ownership of Virgin as a prerequisite in order to get the position.  In other words, if you achieved the prerequisite for the job...you wouldn't even need the job!

Anyways, pardon my rant here, but I've been thankfully involved with a few good, forward thinking IT companies...two thus far that I've done commercials for with my relatively new foray into voice acting.  They thankfully have awesome apps and that startup mentality that me and others have in this market.  It's a matter of time before something breaks and either one or all of these side incomes surpass my main income or I work more with these awesome IT companies in both voice acting or even helping dev their apps.

So, expect to hear me in app commercials soon and... know that I could also be the guy behind the code too.

Despite this rant and all of the silliness going on in the IT market here in New York / Long Island area...there are good IT companies out there and in due time I will "be so happy"

Since reddit is having an "Honest Company Logo" meme going on... thought I'd add my own.

CES 2014: Nikon, Canon and Sony Show Off Device That Makes People Forget Smart Phones Exist

The 3 largest pro camera manufacturers surprised guests at this year's Computer Electronics Show with a new joint project.

Announced towards the end of Sony's presentation of their new 4K Twitter Table, the crowd was welcomed with music from Ace Of Base as executives from each company roller-bladed on to the stage.
Dressed in hipster attire, Sony's Kazuo Hirai took center stage Walkman in hand.
"We were in charge of mobile technology before it was cool." claimed Hirai as he opened the Walkman to reveal what looked like a silver cassette tape.

The device, code named RET90, or "REmember The 90's" supposedly makes consumers revert to their shopping mindset to what it used to be in the 1990's.  Using the same signal once used by analog TV, the RET90 uses the waves from years past to make people still feel that technology is nowhere beyond 1995.  A signal that has been up for sale since all TVs went to digital and apparently bought jointly by the three companies.

Within moments of the RET90's demonstration, attendees of CES suddenly wanted to actually visit brick and mortar stores for their technology needs, wondered to other booths for VHS tape recorders and thought their smarts phones where just pretty alarm clocks.

Best Buy called it "The Highlight of 2014".  "With this device, consumers will actually visit our stores and completely forget what a Bar Code Scanner App is." boosted Best Buy's founder, Richard Schulze.

Immediately after the product's demonstration... Canon, Nikon and Sony directed attendees to their Point and Shoot Camera booths.  Instead of saying "I have a smart phone, why would I need these?", attendees looked onto the marginally better P&S Cameras from last year in total wonder.

"With the RET90, we don't have to focus our R&D on costly new projects.  We can make use of resources we've had available for years and the consumer won't know the difference." stated Nikon's Makoto Kimura.

For the past few years, all three companies created their Mirrorless Cameras lines to try to make consumers forget about the ever improving cameras on their smart phones.  Sales of Point And Shoot Cameras dropped sharply since the iPhone 4's release but the Mirrorless line for both Canon & Nikon turned out as complete failures to sway the public. Sony, only gained marginally on their Mirrorless line and with the RET90, consumers will do what many executives of the tech giants would like...to ignore the internet and revert back to the 1990's when it comes to hand held devices.

"The 90's and earlier were our Golden Age.  A person can come into our stores, pay 10% ABOVE SRP and be none the wiser." says NY Pro Camera Store owner, Shlomo Bergstein.  "Now they come in with their smart phones, amazon listing print outs and we are forced to come clean about the pricing.  With RET90,  we can sell them at prices we want and something the consumer already has."

Adobe's CEO, Shantanu Narayen randomly stepped in during our interview and stated with his strong accent..."With RET90, I can continue to sell software for 3x the price in Australia as I do in the States.  By the way, have you heard of the Creative Cloud?"  He soon jumped over to each CES attendee at arms length asking, "Do you know about the Creative Cloud?" before security escorted him out.

Sony, Nikon and Canon are hoping this device will revive the currently dead point and shoot camera business as well as other products consumer have lost interest in since the 1990s.

...
Due to Sony, Nikon and Canon's various, long and undecipherable SURE, MVP and MAP policies however...we weren't allowed to list the images and expected pricing of the RET90 in fear of deportation, execution...or just a "warning".

'Twas the Night before Christmas. An SRS Tale

I know, I'm a day late...but I couldn't help let this awesome parody of a Christmas classic pass.  It's by Reddit user, Laziness in this post.  For those not aware, SRS or "Shit Reddit Says" is basically a  feminist reddit forum/subreddit group, yet tends to be in of itself a hate/prejudice-group that mainly trolls Reddit with downvote brigades, comment stalking and witch hunts to some people who probably deserved maybe a bit a flack ...but also toward others who did the crime of not fitting in their rather particular mold....

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the land
SRSers were looking for more white men to ban
They decorated each other with feminist flair
And discussed social issues while pretending to care
For the plight of women, children and blacks
And how it made them all angry, regardless of facts
They discussed left-wing agendas like a right-wing fanatic
And inventing terms like 'cis' and 'problematic'

Then suddenly into their sub, who should appear?
Why, old Saint Nick bringing holiday cheer!
He came bustering in like a Christmas tornado!
But before the dust settled SRS called him a pedo
You see Santa was the epitome of what SRS forbids
For starters he focuses too intently on kids
He won't visit the children of your Islamic neighbor
And they say he forces his elves into slave labor
He appropriates reindeer culture ever so slightly
And has a subservient wife who he no doubt rapes nightly

So every Christmas SRS remembers this tale
And how Santa is a privileged cisgendered white male
And despite Santa's reputation of being loved and adored
SRS knows the truth; he's just another shitlord
